We examine select cultural phenomena, challenging clichés of what is typically Bavarian or generally thought to be – from different dialects to famous architecture through diverse customs. “Made in Bavaria: The Bavaria Brand” (ideal for international visitors and people in a hurry)

“Bavarian born and bred but at home in the world!” This not only applies to many Bavarians but also to inventions that have found their way from Bavaria all over the world. We collectively examine what other countries associate with Bavaria and what unites the Free State with other countries. Retrace the footsteps of inventors, leading intellectuals and visionaries, who have made Bavaria famous and are still spreading “Bavaria brand” throughout the world.

“How Bavaria Became a Free State …”

Who is really in charge in Bavaria? Why is there no longer a king today? And what is a Free State in the first place? School students explore the most recent Bavarian history. We use select objects, events, individuals, media installations and activity stations on this dialogical guided tour to trace the development of democracy in Bavaria together and explain how it functions. Includes a vote in the original State Parliament of 1946!

“Rockets, Goggos, Steam Cars: Full Speed through Bavaria”

Nobody can imagine life without a car anymore and many cannot imagine anything better to get quickly from place to place. What did people do earlier, though, when cars were not around or only very few people were able to afford one at all? How were goods shipped through Bavaria and abroad? How did a king get around? And who was the first Bavarian to fly to the moon?

This dialogical themed guided tour with numerous activities teaches school students many interesting things about the history of transportation in Bavaria. They learn about bizarre and useful means of transportation, from Baroque sleighs to the first train, a mysterious rocket ship and even a high-tech carbon bicycle, and design their own rocket. Get in, buckle up and hold on!

“1500 Years of Bavaria: Mystique, Splendor, Histories”

The combined guided tour includes both the state exhibition “One Hundred Treasures from One Thousand Years” and the museum’s permanent exhibition. Whereas the state exhibition recounts Bavarian histories from the early Middle Ages up to around 1800 with select objects from German and European museums, the permanent exhibition revolves around the question “How Bavaria Became a Free State and What Makes It So Distinctive”. It explores the history of Bavaria from around 1800 to the present.

From Wittislingen to Wackersdorf, from the first reference to the Bavarians up to the present … School students travel through one and a half millennia of Bavarian history, receiving an overview of important lines of historical development, learning about key events, being introduced to important figures, and getting objects from a rich history to talk.

“One Hundred Treasures from One Thousand Years”

One hundred objects specially selected from German and European museums recount over 1000 years of Bavarian history from the early Middle Ages up to around 1800. Ten sections cover historical developments in the different regions of Bavaria: Old Bavaria, Franconia and Swabia. The exhibited objects stand for specific events and each one relates its own history. They range from shiny gold treasures and exceptional works of art to everyday items that reveal a lot about the realities of life in earlier times. This survey of history explores opulence and pomp, rebellions and wars, emperors and dukes, religion and grave goods, law and punishment, and artistic and scientific achievements. Engaging explanations of many of the objects on display are provided during the guided tour.

“Best of 100”
Our “Best of 100” express guided tour is intended for visitors with limited time. A narrower selection is made from the 100 objects from German and European museums on display. Rather than relating Bavarian history from the early Middle Ages up to around 1800 at high speed, the objects are used to spotlight specific events and developments in Old Bavaria, Franconia and Swabia, thus delivering an engaging overview of the diversity of history. Particular objects ranging from a gleaming gold medieval book cover to a 16th-century burglary tool are always highlighted.

“One Hundred Treasures from One Thousand Years”

How long has Bavaria existed? How did Bavaria become a kingdom? These are just two question that are answered on the Bavarian State Exhibition’s big trip through time. School students explore Bavarian history between the 6th century and 1800, learning about significant developments from select objects. They relate their own major or minor histories and allow fascinating glimpses of the past. They are shiny gold treasures as well as everyday items, which relate interesting and entertaining information about lifeworlds in olden times. The focus can be placed on specific themes.

“One Hundred Tales from History”

100 objects, 100 treasures, 100 histories! The Bavarian State exhibition has many fascinating and entertaining things to offer even the youngest visitors. The clock of history is turned back to the early Middle Ages around 600 AD. Children learn how people lived in the past, what was important to them, and how they obtained information when modern capabilities did not yet exist. They meet knights, merchants and a female Jewish physician and discover the tales told by the objects.
